Affiliate disclosure
SnowGearSetup.com earns affiliate commissions from Backcountry and, as an Amazon Associate, from qualifying purchases. Commissions cost you nothing extra. No brand pays for a ranking, there are no sponsored placements, and rankings are never adjusted for commission rate.
SnowGearSetup.com is funded entirely by affiliate commissions. When you click a product link here and buy something, the retailer pays us a percentage of the sale. It costs you nothing extra and it does not change the price you pay.
The programmes we participate in
Backcountry. We participate in the Backcountry affiliate programme through the Impact network and earn a commission on qualifying purchases made through links on this site. Backcountry is the primary affiliate here because it carries technical snow equipment from essentially every brand in the sport at the order values that matter in this category: a touring binding, a touring boot, an avalanche airbag, a beacon, probe and shovel kit.
Amazon Associates. SnowGearSetup.com is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Amazon covers the accessory half of a snow setup particularly well: socks, base layers, wax, straps, boot dryers and hand warmers.
Certain content that appears on this site comes from Amazon. This content is provided as is and is subject to change or removal at any time. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date and time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of the product.
What the commission does not influence
No brand pays for a position. There are no sponsored rankings, no paid placements, no guest posts and no link insertions on this site. Nobody has bought their way onto a page here and nobody can.
Rankings are not adjusted for commission rate. Commission rates differ between retailers and between product categories, sometimes by several percentage points. Rankings here are by tier, based on published specifications and the trade-offs those specifications describe, and they are the same rankings they would be if every rate were identical.
We recommend against buying things. Every build guide on this site carries a "what you can skip" section, and on the touring ladder the skip list explicitly puts a second avalanche course ahead of an airbag pack, which is the most expensive single item we could otherwise be pushing. Telling somebody not to buy something is the only credible signal that the rest of the list was assembled for them.
Why every product link is an affiliate link
This is deliberate and it is worth explaining, because "every link is affiliate" can read as aggressive. The alternative in practice is not fewer links, it is links to manufacturer homepages that earn nothing while still sending you off the site. A sister site in this portfolio shipped with 128 links to brand homepages, on its highest-value items, and every one of those clicks was given away for nothing.
So every product mention here links either to a verified retail listing or, where a specific model is not stocked, to a category search that lands on a populated shelf. Where a Backcountry button reads "shop the category", the page says plainly that it opens a search for that category rather than that exact model, so it finds comparable gear alongside it rather than pretending to be something it is not.
Prices and availability
Prices quoted anywhere on this site are what the retailer listed when the page was last checked, and they change constantly. Every table and every product card says so. Always confirm the current price, the size and the stock on the retailer page before buying, and treat the totals in the build guides as a realistic budget rather than a quotation.
Cookies and tracking
Affiliate links set a cookie in your browser that lets the retailer attribute a purchase to this site, typically for a limited window after the click. We also use Google Analytics to see which pages are read and which links are clicked, in aggregate. We do not collect names, addresses or payment details, and we never see your order. The privacy policy covers this in full.
Editorial independence, stated plainly
We do not test equipment in person and we say so on every page. Every specification quoted here is a manufacturer published figure, a published certification standard, or a pattern across verified owner reviews. Where the safety answer and the commercial answer point in different directions, the safety answer wins: this site refuses to publish binding release values, which is a page a lot of people search for, because that number belongs to a certified technician with a calibrated jig.
If you would rather not use our links, that is entirely fine. Search for the product name at any retailer and buy it there. The specifications and the reasoning on these pages are the useful part, and they are free either way.
Questions about any of this go to the contact page. See also the safety disclaimer, which sets out the limits of everything published here, particularly on avalanche terrain and binding release settings.
How we choose: we compare published manufacturer specifications, published certification standards and verified owner reviews across retailers. We do not test equipment in person, and every figure quoted here is the manufacturer's published number unless we say otherwise. This is researched buying guidance and not professional instruction: binding release values are set by a certified technician on a calibrated jig, and avalanche terrain requires formal training and a current regional forecast that no article can replace.
